San Bernardino County residents are invited to help shape the future of local disaster preparedness as work continues on the 2027 Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan (MJHMP). Updated every five years, the federally required plan serves as the County’s roadmap for identifying hazards, reducing disaster risks and strengthening the resilience of communities before disasters occur.

The San Bernardino County Office of Emergency Services (OES), in partnership with consultant Synergy Disaster Recovery and the Hazard Mitigation Planning Team, is leading the 2026–2027 update. An important part of the process is hearing directly from the people and organizations that experience these hazards, including residents, businesses, community-based organizations, participating jurisdictions, tribal partners and other stakeholders throughout San Bernardino County.

A public engagement website has been launched to provide information about the plan and give community members several ways to participate. Residents can begin by completing a brief, five-minute Community Survey to share their experiences, concerns and priorities related to hazards and disaster risk.

The website also features an Idea Board where community members can suggest potential hazard mitigation projects and actions for consideration in the updated plan. Participants can submit their own ideas, vote for projects they would like to see prioritized and provide feedback on strategies to reduce risks from natural hazards. This input will help the planning team better understand which mitigation efforts are most important to communities across the county.

Additional opportunities for participation will be available as the planning process continues. Three digital open houses are planned, focusing on experiences and concerns with hazards, a risk assessment summary and prioritization of mitigation actions, and ultimately a review of the draft plan. A Public Review Draft will also be made available for residents and stakeholders to review and comment on before the plan is finalized.

Community participation is an important part of creating a plan that reflects the needs and priorities of San Bernardino County’s diverse communities. By sharing experiences and ideas now, residents can help identify opportunities to reduce risk, strengthen local resilience and better prepare our communities for future disasters.
