Today, our mountain communities are mourning the loss of Jackie, Big Bear’s beloved bald eagle.
After several weeks of intensive medical care, Jackie passed away early this morning at the Ojai Raptor Center. I am deeply grateful to the wildlife rescuers, veterinarians and specialists who worked so hard to care for her, and to Friends of Big Bear Valley for sharing Jackie’s extraordinary life with all of us.
For years, Jackie and her mate, Shadow, gave us a remarkable window into the beauty and resilience of wildlife in the San Bernardino Mountains. We watched them weather winter storms, protect their eggs and raise eaglets together. Along the way, Jackie became a true local icon who touched the hearts of millions of people around the world. Through the Big Bear eagle cam, she helped teach generations about bald eagles and the natural world while showcasing the incredible beauty of the Big Bear Valley and the San Bernardino Mountains.
Jackie leaves behind a remarkable legacy, including the eaglets she and Shadow successfully raised and the countless people who developed a deeper appreciation for these magnificent birds because of her.
Big Bear won’t be quite the same without her.
