The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is progressing steadily on a $21.9 million pavement rehabilitation and shoulder widening project along State Route 247 (SR-247) in the Morongo Basin. Funded by Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, this project aims to improve safety, pavement life, and access for all users—including motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Construction is underway between the State Route 62 junction and Gin Road near Yucca Valley. Motorists will notice construction signs, high-visibility fencing for environmental protection, and active clearing operations in shoulder areas. Caltrans expects to complete the project by fall 2025.

What to Expect the Week of June 30:

  • Daytime Work: Shoulder operations will continue. Please proceed cautiously, as construction vehicles may enter and exit active areas throughout the day for backfill and other operations.

Looking Ahead – Night Work Begins July 6:

  • Paving Operations: Nightly paving will begin the week of July 6, with traffic control and flagging in place at various locations. Drivers should expect up to 20-minute wait times in each direction. Please plan accordingly and observe all posted signage, as law enforcement will be present to ensure safety.

Larrea Road Closure Coming in July:

  • Extended closures will be required at Larrea Road later in July. Access may be limited. Caltrans will provide more details once the dates are confirmed.

Additional project improvements include upgraded drainage at key locations and new Class II bike lanes to enhance roadway safety and usability for cyclists.

All work is weather-dependent and subject to change based on material availability and construction needs.
