The San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools (SBCSS), in partnership with the San Bernardino County Department of Veterans Affairs, is proud to announce the 16th Annual Operation Recognition Veterans Diploma Project. This heartfelt initiative honors veterans whose education was interrupted due to military service or internment in Japanese American camps during World War II.

Since the program’s inception in 2009, nearly 300 veterans have been honored, receiving high school diplomas that acknowledge their sacrifices and restore what was rightfully theirs. This year, applications are open for veterans who served in World War II, the Korean War, or the Vietnam War, as well as individuals who were interned in Japanese American relocation camps during World War II. Posthumous recognition is also available—allowing families of deceased veterans to apply on their behalf.

Eligibility Requirements and Application Process

To participate, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Veterans must have received an honorable discharge from service in WWII, Korea, or Vietnam.
  • Individuals must have been enrolled in high school prior to enlistment or internment.
  • Applicants must reside in San Bernardino County.

The deadline to apply for this year’s program is Monday, October 14, 2024, and participation is completely free of charge.

Veterans, or their families, are encouraged to submit their applications and receive this meaningful recognition. For more information or to apply, visit vdp.sbcss.k12.ca.us or call 909-386-2412. A Tribute to Sacrifice and Service

During times of war, countless young men and women set aside their education and the comforts of home to bravely serve in the armed forces. These veterans not only ensured our freedoms but also shaped the course of history. While many led productive lives upon returning home, they were often unable to complete their education.

Through the Operation Recognition Veterans Diploma Project, SBCSS and the County Department of Veterans Affairs aim to honor these individuals. By awarding long-overdue high school diplomas, this initiative serves as a gesture of gratitude for the contributions and sacrifices these veterans made. The program also reflects the power of community appreciation, recognizing that it is never too late to celebrate acts of courage and resilience.

This initiative is authorized by the California Education Code, which permits the awarding of retroactive diplomas to eligible veterans and individuals interned during World War II.

If you or a loved one meets the criteria, take this opportunity to apply and join others in receiving this meaningful recognition. Each diploma represents not just an academic achievement but a tribute to the sacrifice, valor, and dedication of those who served.
