The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has relaunched its holiday initiative, Operation Smash & Grab. This coordinated effort, funded by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, combats the rise in organized retail theft during the holiday season. By targeting criminal crews responsible for robberies and other theft-related crimes, the operation aims to create a safer shopping environment for all.

The 2024 initiative has already yielded significant results, with nearly three dozen arrests and the recovery of over $2,000 in stolen property. Deputies and detectives, often working undercover, collaborate with participating stores to apprehend suspects during in-progress crimes. Additionally, automated license plate readers are deployed in parking lots to track stolen vehicles and those linked to criminal investigations.

Shoppers are reminded to take precautions to ensure their safety during the holidays. Key tips include securing valuables out of sight in vehicles, staying aware of surroundings, shopping with a companion, and using ATMs in well-lit areas. The Sheriff’s Department also advises holiday gift buyers to limit cash use, keep personal belongings close, and choose parking in heavily populated, well-lit areas.

For those shopping online, caution is also essential. Stick to trusted retailers, verify unfamiliar sellers, and avoid deals that seem too good to be true. Scam artists ramp up activity during the holiday season, so it’s essential to remain vigilant and safeguard personal and financial information. Everyone can enjoy a safe and stress-free holiday shopping experience by staying alert and prepared.
