On March 17, 2025, our community suffered a profound loss when Deputy Hector Cuevas Jr. of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department was killed in the line of duty. Deputy Cuevas, 36, was tragically involved in a fatal collision during a high-speed pursuit of a stolen vehicle in Victorville. Though first responders rushed to his side, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Deputy Cuevas leaves behind a loving wife, two young children, his parents, a sister, and a brother. A devoted family man, Hector was known for his infectious energy, deep faith, and unwavering commitment to serving others. A six-year law enforcement veteran, he spent the past three years stationed in Victorville, following earlier service with the Upland Police Department. For those who knew him, he was not just a deputy — he was a protector, a mentor, and a friend.

“He was a cop’s cop,” Sheriff Shannon Dicus shared. “The kind of law enforcement officer we all strive to be — a man who could engage with a hardened gang member one moment and reassure a frightened child the next.”

Hector’s dedication extended beyond the badge. He was an active member of his church and a beloved football coach in Rialto, having mentored young athletes at Carter High School. He also played for the San Bernardino Spartans, a team of local law enforcement and firefighters. Known affectionately as “Coach Hector,” he made a lasting impact on and off the field. At the Spartans’ first game following his passing, the team took the field with only ten players, leaving Hector’s position open in silent tribute. His jersey stood proudly on the sidelines as teammates, friends, and family honored his memory.

The suspect in the pursuit, 22-year-old Ryan Dwayne Turner Jr., has been charged with second-degree murder, evading law enforcement, and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. Turner has a prior history of fleeing police and was released early from a previous conviction under state sentencing laws — a point of anguish and frustration for those mourning this senseless loss.

The community response has been profoundly moving. Residents held vigils at the crash site and Spear of Love Christian Church in San Bernardino. They hung flags, lit candles, and laid flowers in tribute. People gathered from Rialto to Victorville and across San Bernardino County to share stories of Hector’s kindness, strength, and steadfast service.

To support Deputy Cuevas’ wife and two small children during this unimaginable time, the Sheriff’s Employees’ Benefit Association (SEBA) has launched a fundraising campaign. Every dollar raised will go directly to the family to help ease the financial burdens that come with such a tragic and sudden loss. To donate and share your support, visit www.seba.com or the Sheriff’s website.

Rest in peace, Deputy Cuevas. Your watch has ended, but your light continues to shine in the hearts of all who knew you.
