Animal shelters across California, including those in San Bernardino County, are facing an ongoing crisis: they are full to capacity. A key contributor to this problem is pet overpopulation, largely driven by unsterilized pets producing unexpected litters. To combat this issue and help residents do their part, San Bernardino County is offering spay and neuter vouchers through its Animal Sterilization Assistance Program.

If you live in an unincorporated area of San Bernardino County or in the City of Big Bear Lake, you may be eligible to receive financial assistance to help cover the cost of spaying or neutering your pet. Qualified residents can receive:

  • $200 toward the sterilization of a dog
  • $100 toward the sterilization of a cat

These vouchers are available on a first-come, first-served basis while funding lasts and can be redeemed at pre-approved participating local veterinary clinics. The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors has dedicated $180,000 annually to the program to make it easier and more affordable for residents to be part of the solution.

Spaying and neutering offer significant benefits for both pets and communities. In addition to helping prevent pet overpopulation, sterilized pets are generally healthier, less prone to certain cancers and infections, and often exhibit fewer behavioral issues like aggression, roaming, or marking territory.

The program runs through July 1, 2025, or until funds are exhausted. Eligible residents are encouraged to act quickly to secure their vouchers. To check if you live in an eligible area, use the Voucher Eligibility Map provided by San Bernardino County Animal Care.

Let’s work together to ease the burden on local shelters and ensure a healthier, happier future for our pets and community. Thank you for doing your part!
