On Monday, July 21, 2025, at 6:00 p.m., the Barstow Community College Performing Arts Center will host The Yuhaaviatam Story: Marra’yam Ancestral Lands—a special evening dedicated to celebrating the rich culture, history, and enduring legacy of the Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation.
The event will explore the deep-rooted connections of the Maara’yam (Serrano) people to their ancestral lands and how these connections continue to shape identity, stewardship, and meaningful ties to the Barstow area and the greater High Desert region.
Attendees will be welcomed by San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Dawn Rowe, followed by a video presentation on the Yuhaaviatam Creation Story, offering a powerful look into the tribe’s cultural foundations.
The evening will also feature remarks from Joseph “Joe” Maarango, the Culture Seat Member of the Yuhaaviatam Tribal Council of San Manuel. As a dedicated advocate for preserving and promoting Tribal culture, history, language, and traditions, Maarango brings valuable insight into the ongoing efforts to keep the Maara’yam heritage alive and thriving.
This free, open community event includes light refreshments and welcomes all who wish to learn more about the Yuhaaviatam people and their enduring legacy in the region.
Don’t miss this unforgettable evening of cultural reflection, storytelling, and community connection.
